HELPFUL STRATEGIES FOR ELL'S AND STUDENTS OF DIFFERENT ABILITIES

  • Encourage ELL's to write with the language they are most comfortable with. 

  • Pair up students for group work who share the same native language.

  • DO NOT have students read aloud texts to class. 

  • Post writing prompts (DO-NOWS) daily to encourage students to stay on task.

  • Include audio clips of novels you may be reading, and when applicable, films of the novels, to encourage students to learn from a variety of different sources. 

  • For those who are struggling with the vocabulary, they will be given a shorter passage.

  • For those who are struggling with the material, they will be asked to read short chunks of easier passages.

  • Use visuals 

  • Use sentence frames to help with academic language instruction. 

  • Ask pre, during, and post reading targeted questions.
